Catawba Island Township Board of Township Trustees

Meeting Minutes

January 23, 2018

The regular business meeting of the Catawba Island Board of Township Trustees was called to order by Chairman Gary Mortus on Tuesday, January 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room.

In attendance were Gary Mortus, Matt Montowski, William Rofkar, Karen Shaw, Dan Barlow,
John Gangway, Kevin Wylie, Craig Koerpel, Diane Belden, and Randy Riedmaier.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

William Rofkar made a motion to approve the January 9, 2018 Board of Trustees regular meeting minutes as presented. Matt Montowski seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Matt Montowski made a motion to approve and pay the bills, including the payroll, in the amount of $57,708.44. William Rofkar seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Correspondence

A letter from Diane Belden expressing appreciation for support of the Wreaths Across America ceremony by Township Trustees and a special thank you to Dan Barlow and Ernie Wylie for their hard work and dedication.

A letter from Alex Morgan Johnson requesting use of the Community Hall to hold Port Clinton Middle School Cheer Camp from July 16 through July 12.

Trustees agreed Alex Morgan Johnson could use the Community Hall for PCMS Cheer Camp as requested and waived the rental fee.

A letter from Craig Koerpel of the Catawba Island Historical Society requesting use of the Community Hall on Monday, May 7, for the 2018 Speakers Series.

Trustees agreed the Catawba Island Historical Society could use the Community Hall for the Speaker Series presentation on May 7 and waived the rental fee.

A letter from Eryn Binder requesting use of the Community Hall on June 2, 2018 for an event.

Trustees agreed Eryn Binder, Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Department member, could use the Community Hall as requested and waived the rental fee.

A letter from Carl Koebel expressing interest in a position on the Ottawa County Board of Health should a position become available.

A letter from the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District regarding a variety of trees being offered to Ottawa County townships, villages and cities at a 10% discount.

An introduction letter from Damschroder Roofing, Inc. of Fremont.

Police

Police Chief John Gangway said he is in the process of getting a firm quote for a new police vehicle and in car video equipment. John Gangway said he is also pricing video equipment for use in the police station during interviews.

Maintenance

Maintenance Supervisor Dan Barlow said he is getting prices for consideration of a new and larger backhoe that would be beneficial for use in the compost area in addition to the cemetery.

Dan Barlow presented a proposal from the Ottawa County Engineer’s Office for drainage work to be performed in the cemetery. Trustees agreed they would prefer to meet with someone from the Ottawa Engineer’s Office to discuss the project prior to approval.

Dan Barlow said the Ottawa County Engineer’s Office reached out to Frontier regarding several broken poles in the township. Dan Barlow also said the Ottawa County Engineer’s Office is going to improve signage at the intersection of Sand Road and West Catawba Road in the near future.

William Rofkar asked Dan Barlow to check on a couple missing road signs in the township.

Zoning

Matt Montowski said the Board of Zoning Appeals invited Ottawa County Prosecutor James VanEerten to the training meeting on April 11.

New Business

Craig Koerpel gave an update on the Ottawa County Historical Society and said they hope to be open to the public in June of 2018. He said Ken Williams and Linda Snyder are new board members bringing the OCHS Board count to nine.

William Rofkar made a motion to approve a contract with Ohler & Holzhauer, Inc. for plumbing at the chapel for $9,986.91 and approve a contract with A.T. Emmett for electrical work at the chapel for $10,802. Matt Montowski seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Matt Montowski made a motion to renew the annual Workers’ Compensation Group Rating
Program contract through CareWorksComp for $1,497 with services beginning July 1, 2018.
William Rofkar seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

Matt Montowski made a motion to approve the Employee Policies Manual as amended effective January 23, 2018. William Rofkar seconded the motion. All voted aye. Motion carried.

William Rofkar made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Matt Montowski seconded the motion. All voted aye. The meeting adjourned at 8:38 p.m.
