Parks & Recreation
Catawba Island is blessed with a number of parks and recreational areas to provide walking trails, community activities, natural areas, opportunities to exercise and abundant green space. Heigel Park, which was generously donated to the township, is located on Catawba Woods Road and provides two tennis courts, a basketball court, four pickleball courts, a shuffleboard court, soccer fields, a sledding hill, playground equipment and a picnic shelter. The township also owns and operates a public boat launch with access to West Harbor and Lake Erie.
The Cedar Meadow Preserve was purchased in 2005 by Catawba Island Township with assistance from the Clean Ohio Fund and the Black Swamp Conservancy. The Cedar Meadow Preserve is over 62 acres of mixed meadow, forest and wetland. It sits behind the Township offices and fire hall, adjacent to both Northeast Catawba Road and West Catawba Road. It was, at the time of purchase, the largest remaining parcel of land available for preservation on Catawba – unbroken by backyards, roads, or buildings.
